Continentum Light

The assignment here was to create any lamp of our choosing and specify how it could be realistically manufactured.

We ended up selecting my idea of a collapsible mountain, I envisioned a line of lamps that would be modeled after famous peaks all over the world. A potential customer might see this lamp as a collector's piece that would reflect their fascination with nature or as a trophy to commemorate their successful ascent up the mountain in question.

Besides directing the creative vision and coming up with ideas, I modeled most of the parts/assembly in SolidWorks. The final result can be seen below: With the elevation lines of the Kilimanjaro Mountain in Tanzania as a divider of the wooden layers, diffuse lighting spills out from the side after pressing the peak as a scissor mechanism pushes the plates outward, guided by many rails that ensure stiffness.

For me, this project reminded me how engaged I feel when contributing to the big picture vision of a project. Making the many parts fit into a cohesive end result is highly rewarding.
